Lipitor (atorvastatin) and Crestor (rosuvastatin)

Popular drugs such as Lipitor and Crestor, prescribed to help reduce cholesterol, have been linked to an increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, especially in older patients.

Several studies in the last two years of patients 65 and older who were treated with Lipitor (atorvastatin), Crestor (rosuvastatin) or Zocor (simvastatin), show a 15- to 30-percent risk increase for developing Type 2 diabetes compared with patients on a different class of medication.

Such findings led the FDA to force the makers of these drugs to list as a possible side effect the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
