The FDA has recalled certain lots of a blood pressure medication because they may contain impurities that could cause cancer. Photo of prescription drugs

According to USA Today, the agency recalled certain lots of Irbesartan tablets manufactured by ScieGen Pharmaceuticals and labeled as Westminster Pharmaceuticals, in addition to lots by Golden State Medical Supply, Inc (GSMS). The recall was announced at the beginning of this month.

The lots reportedly contain N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA), which the International Agency for Research on Cancer lists as a potential human carcinogen. The drugs were sold in 75 mg, 150 mg, and 300 mg doses.

The FDA has published a complete list of effected drug lots that can be viewed by clicking on the hyperlink in this sentence. If you have questions, the agency recommends taking to your physician or pharmacist.

Irbesartan is prescribed to treat high blood pressure and can be used to treat kidney disease.

Heart Drug Recalled Due to Possible Cancer-Causing Contamination

In addition to the November recall, in August, the FDA issued a recall of the drug valsartan, which is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure, after lots were discovered to contain N-nitrosodimethylamine. This is also linked to cancer.

The recall was global in nature and included tablets of dosages 40mg to 320mg, including those made by:

  • A-S Medication Solutions (labeled as Solco Healthcare)
  • Bryant Ranch Prepack
  • HJ Harkins Company
  • Northwind Pharmaceuticals
  • Prinston Pharmaceutical Inc. (labeled as Solco Healthcare)
  • Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd. (some labeled as Actavis, some as Major Pharmaceuticals)

It is sad that these recalls are occurring, as drug manufacturers have a duty to make sure their products are safe for consumption.
