Alcoa Badin
In 1913, the French company L’Aluminium Français began building an aluminum smelting plant and a dam along the Yadkin River, leading to the creation of the town of Badin to accommodate its workforce. The onset of World War I, however, forced the French to abandon the project. In 1915, the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) took over the site, completed the Narrows Dam, and started aluminum production by 1917. Powered by hydroelectric energy from the river, the plant quickly became a major local employer. Alcoa added local dams for more power and added capacity over the decades. In 2002, the Badin plant ceased production. It was officially closed a few years later.
