Alcoa Point Comfort in Texas
Our Experience:
For over 25 years Cappolino Dodd Krebs, LLP actively pursued asbestos claims against Alcoa on behalf of workers and their families. Our knowledge of Alcoa’s liability is unmatched because we have been in hundreds of depositions of Alcoa workers and have uncovered tens of thousands of pages of Alcoa internal documents. We’ve successfully represented many of those injured by the Alcoa Point Comfort facility.
Who we can help:
We have represented hundreds of Alcoans sickened by asbestos. We’ve also represented a large number of spouses and family members who were exposed to asbestos in their homes through “take home exposure,” which is when workers unintentionally bring asbestos home with them on their dirty work clothes. Mesothelioma, lung cancer, colon cancer, and severe non-malignant lung scarring are all claims we can help you file against Alcoa. What happened at Alcoa Point Comfort:
Established in 1948, the Alcoa Point Comfort (APC) facility became a cornerstone of the aluminum industry in Texas. Unfortunately, it’s success was based on Alcoa’s almost universal use of asbestos. By the late 1950’s, APC expanded to include its own alumina refinery, processing raw bauxite from South America and other sources into alumina. This alumina was then used in the pots at APC and other Alcoa facilities to make aluminum. As the plant grew, more and more asbestos materials were consumed.
A (later controversial) chlorine-alkali plant was established on the site, which contributed to the alleged contamination of Lavaca Bay. There was also a coal tar processing plant on site. Aluminum smelting pots in use at APC were “old style” Soderberg pots. They lacked the fume ducts present in more modern smelters. By about 1980, smelting at the facility wound down, and with it, Alcoa’s Point Comfort’s reliance on asbestos.
Alumina refining continued on site until the 2010’s, when it was curtailed and eventually closed by Alcoa. Among the many asbestos products believed to have been used at Alcoa Point Comfort were products manufactured or supplied by Johns Manville, Owens Corning Fiberglas, Childers MFG., U.S. Gypsum, Harbison-Walker, AP Green, Phillip Carey, Austin Asbestos, Chicago Firebrick, Carborundum, Quigley Co., Louisville Insulation and Supply Co, Lovell Insulations, Eagle-Pitcher, GAF Corp., Plibrico, Stanton, Glasrock Products, NARCO, Iowa-Illinois Thermal, Electric Supply, Globe Machinery, Sauereisen Cements Co., as well as some Carey products. Cappolino Dodd Krebs, LLP is aware of many more specific products used at this facility.
