The number of lawsuits filed against Bayer over its weed killer Roundup have surged over the past couple months, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The news outlet reported that lawsuit numbers grew in October to 42,700, drastically up from 18,400 in July. Plaintiffs allege that Roundup has caused them non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other forms of cancer.

There were reports in August that the surge in lawsuits may cause Bayer to settle claims to avoid further damaging verdicts. In one case, a California man was awarded $289 million after he successfully claimed that Roundup caused him cancer, creating headlines across the country.

Keep in mind, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a branch of the World Health Organization, found glyphosate, used in Roundup, is a probable carcinogen.

Due to the large number of lawsuits filed recently, a federal judge ordered a mediation process, but as of last week, there was no serious talks occurring. Based on the surge in lawsuits, some economists have predicted that any serious settlement could cost Bayer $15-20 billion.
