National Public Radio had an interesting story recently about medical malpractice, saying that researchers found that patients said it was common for “health care providers to withhold information about medical mistakes.”

According to NPR, researchers with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine interviewed 236 patients who completed ProPublica’s Patient Harm Questionnaire during a one-year period ending in May 2013. The study found that only “9 percent of patients said [a] medical facility voluntarily disclosed the harm.”

The harm induced includes instances of malpractice and errors. The researchers found that when providers did disclose harm, it was because they were forced to. The study found that more than 30 percent of patients reported paying bills related to the harm at an average cost of $14,024.

It should be noted that the Journal of Patient Safety estimated last year thatat least 210,000 U.S. hospital patients a year die from medical mistakes.”
