Ever read about a “never event” or hear the term used when discussing medical malpractice cases?

“Never events” occur when mistakes are made during healthcare procedures that should never happen. These mistakes can include surgery on the wrong organ, items being left in a patient and other forms of gross negligence.

Alarmingly, “never events” occur in about 1 in every 112,000 surgeries, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which defines the events as “vivid and terrifying errors”.

In one case, two Vanderbilt University Medical Center doctors said they mistakenly implanted a medical device in the wrong kidney of a patient in 2017, according to USA Today.

The doctors claimed that a malfunctioning whiteboard helped contribute to the error. The patient later went on to sue Vanderbilt for more than $20 million, but died before the conclusion of her case. Her children are opting to continue litigation.

Lawyers argued that before her death, the woman suffered damage that required her to be on dialysis for the rest of her life.
