Medtronic is facing lawsuits from people who claim that they were seriously injured by staplers used during surgeries and the company knowingly hid the risks.

According to StarTribune.com, attorneys representing the plaintiffs, including a Texas claimant, say that Medtronic knowingly sold defective medical devices to the public, and hid the risks from doctors and patients.

The lawsuits were filed in December, claiming that patients that had gastrointestinal surgeries had the staplers malfunction when they were placed into organs. This allegedly led to holes being left in patients without staples and wounds not being closed properly.

The plaintiffs now claim that they suffer from side effects including infections, cardiac issues and have to have had corrective surgeries. Medtronic has denied issues with the staplers and wrote a report to the Food and Drug Administration saying that the devices work consistently when used safely.

It should be noted that in 2019, the FDA recommended the reclassification of surgical staplers so they would be more highly regulated by the agency. The agency disclosed that it received more than 100,000 reports of complications, including 412 reported deaths linked to surgical staplers in general, not just Medtronic devices.

The information came to light when Kaiser Health had a report about medical device malfunctions that were documented in FDA databases that were not known to the public.
