The number of lawsuits brought on by consumers against Monsanto’s weed-killer Roundup has swelled to more than 8,000 nationwide.

As we blog about last month, a California man was awarded $289 million after he successfully sued Monsanto claiming that Roundup weed killer caused him cancer.

The attention generated by the case and other benchmark litigation has created a swell in the number of cases filed across the country. Mega-corporation Bayer purchased Monsanto in June in a $63 billion deal, with shares losing more than 10 percent following the verdict. Bayer is expected to fight lawsuits and appeal the California verdict. However, these cases could take several years to resolve.

Attorneys for the California-man successfully argued that his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma was a result of the use of the glyphosate-based weed-killer during his job. He allegedly worked as a groundskeeper and pest control manager for a school system, and claimed he used Roundup up to 30 times per year.

It should be noted that the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a branch of the World Health Organization, found glyphosate is a probable carcinogen in 2015.
