Are bounce houses safe? This is a question that parents need to ask before having a one at a child’s party or before allowing a child to play in one.

Earlier this year, CNN reported that bounce house injuries across the country were beginning to skyrocket. The news outlet reported that a study conducted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission showed that inflatable bouncer-related injuries rose 1,500 percent between 1995 and 2010.

According to CNN, in Maryland alone, in 2010, 31 children were treated in emergency rooms because of personal injuries they suffered in bounce houses. Of the children injured, nearly 20 percent suffered serious head or neck injuries.

The news outlet reported that in order to avoid injuries, parents should monitor their children while playing in a bounce house, not allowing children to perform flips or somersaults. In addition, experts said that children under the age of six should not be allowed to play in bounce houses.

It should be noted that recently a Houston family was awarded $1.3 million after their child was injured in an inflated bounce house.  Their child was reportedly playing at Pump it Up, an inflatable business in the Woodlands.

The child involved in the case reportedly fell off a 7-foot high bounce area and hit his head on a concrete floor. He suffered a fractured skull and bleeding in three places in his brain.  The child now suffers from developmental complications and has issues with stuttering. He also has memory problems.
